Jay Moore, founder of the ordinary christian

Jay Moore is just a highly educated ordinary Christian who has a passion to help other Christians become competent and confident in making disciples for Jesus Christ.

Jay is married to his college sweetheart, Linda, they have been happily married since 1979. They have four grown children (3 boys and 1 girl) and at the present 5 grandkids (4 boys and 1 girl).  He also, has 1 very arrogant cat by the name of Sienna who loves to ignore him.  They live in Tucson, Arizona and they love the beauty of God creation as they watch the stunning sunsets of the Southwest!

In 1977, after hearing a story on the nightly news about a former co-worker becoming the tenth victim of the Hillside Stranger, God convicted Jay’s heart about how self-centered he had become and concerned more about his own personal image than he was about the eternity of others' without Christ. So, in November of 1977 Jay committed to never again intentionally withhold the Gospel of Jesus Christ from others out of fear of how it might make him look. From that day forward Jay has been on a path to become a more effective personal witness and now trains others to share the Gospel of Jesus Christwith competence and confidence.

Jay founded The Ordinary Christian in 2012 with the intent of empowering, encouraging and equipping everyday Christians to brightly shine the Light of Christ in their part of this dark world by joining God on His mission of making disciples of all nations.

In 1981 Jay graduated from California Baptist University with a BA in Religion.

In 1996 Jay graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and earned a Masters of Arts in Religious Education.

While at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Jay was awarded the prestigious R. Othel Feather Award in Educational Evangelism from the School of Religious Education.

Jay is the author of two books on missional living called: THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE: A Journey Into Missional Living & LIVING ON MISSION IN SPITE OF MY FEAR: Biblical Advice On Relieving An Anxious Heart. Both books were written to empower, encourage and equip ordinary Christians with the basic skills and confidence necessary for shining the Light of Christ brightly in their part of this dark world.

Though known as a powerful communicator of Biblical truth, Jay is also known and appreciated for his mentoring and coaching of individuals, who have been overlooked by others, to grow and have powerful ministries in their own right.

Jay was also the co-host of the radio program THE CONSTRUCTION ZONE.  This was weekly radio program to support the men and women coming out of addiction and into recovery by the power of the Holy Spirit. The main host of the show, Pastor Larry Munguia of The Sober Project, was one of those men that Jay mentored.

Jay has been in full-time Christian ministry since 1984. He has served as a youth pastor, pastor, church planter, senior pastor in both California and Arizona.

It is Jay’s life mission to raise up, train up and unleash an ever increasing labor force of ordinary Christians, to join God in igniting church planting/disciple making movements all around the globe.

Mission Statement:

The mission of The Ordinary Christian is to join Christ on His mission of making disciples of all nations, people groups and languages, baptizing them and teaching them to obey all that Christ commands!

Purpose Statement:

The Ordinary Christian exists to empower, encourage and equip Christians to become reproducing disciple makers that ignite Disciple Making/Church Planting Movements.

Vison Statement:

The vision of The Ordinary Christian is raise up, train up and unleash a harvest labor force of ordinary christians that will go into all the world making more disciples, until there's #NoPlaceLeft to go.  To totally saturate this world with the Kingdom of God by sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

Value Statement:

We Value:

  • Biblical Authority: We believe that the Bible is the final, reliable and perfect authority for living the Christian life and therefore is the basis for all disciple making processes and tactics.

  • Ordinary Christians: We believe that ordinary Christians are God's primary choice for accomplishing His extraordinary mission.

  • Simplicity: We believe the mission of disciple making doesn't need to be complicated but instead simple. Simple, however, doesn't mean shallow! We believe that it is not the intellect of a person that determines the spiritual potential of a Christian but their surrender and obedience to Christ and, therefore, the evangelism and discipleship process needs to be so simple that any person of any educational level can learn from it and reproduce it.

  • Reproducibility: We believe that every Christian should be a reproducing Disciple Maker and therefore should be trained and equipped to reproduce. The best measure to determine if a strategy is reproducible is whether it actually reproduces and if it is able to be reproduced by any and all Christians.

Statement Of Faith:

What We Believe!

About God

God is the creator and ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three persons – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God. (Genesis 1:1, 26, 27; 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; 1 Peter 1:2; 2 Corinthians 13:14)

About Man

Man is made in the spiritual image of God, to be like him in character. He is the supreme object of God’s creation. Although man has tremendous potential for good, he is marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called "sin." This attitude separates man from God. (Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; Romans 3:23; Isaiah 59:1, 2)

About Eternity

Man was created to exist forever. He will either exist eternally separated from God by sin or in union with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is hell. To be eternally in union with him is eternal life. Heaven and hell are places of eternal existence. (John 3:16; 1 John 2:25; 1 John 5:11-13; Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:15; Matthew 25:31-46)

About Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is co-equal with the Father. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all men by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to heaven’s glory and will return again to earth to reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. (Matthew 1:22, 23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5, 14:10-30; Hebrews 4:14, 15; 1 Corinthians 15:3, 4; Romans 1:3, 4; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Timothy 6:14, 15; Titus 2:13)

About Salvation

Salvation is a gift from God to man. Man can never make up for his sin by self-improvement or good works – only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God’s offer of forgiveness can man be saved from sin’s penalty. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith. (Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8, 9; John 14:6, 1:12; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26; Romans 5:1)

About Eternal Security

Because God gives man eternal life through Jesus Christ, the believer is secure in salvation for eternity. Salvation is maintained by the grace and power of God, not by the self-effort of the Christian. (John 10:29; 2 Timothy 1:12; Hebrews 7:25; 10:10, 14; 1 Peter 1:3-5)

About The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son as God. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. The Christian seeks to live under his control daily. (2 Corinthians 3:17; John 16:7-13, 14:16, 17; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 2:12, 3:16; Ephesians 1:13; Galatians 5:25; Ephesians 5:1)

About The Bible

The Bible is God’s word to all men. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is truth without any mixture of error. (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20, 21; 2 Timothy 1:13; Psalm 119:105,160, 12:6; Proverbs 30:5)
